Brighton Beach Pride 2018

For the second year in a row, New York’s Russian LGBT community marched along the boardwalk from Coney Island to Brighton Beach. The group protested homophobia and discrimination in the neighborhood, which with its large russian speaking population is a link to their native culture. Putin’s Russia has taken an increasingly hard stance against LGBT people over the past years, and several of today’s participants came to the US fleeing persecution.

Book- Making Workshop

Students had the opportunity to choose a two- weekend workshop led by book designer Teun Van Der Heijden and photographer Ying Ang (who is also an ICP alumni).

Together they helped students observe on their own work with a different perspective, by making a larger sequence of their photographic project, pair images and make them interact with each other in a form of a book.

“Photographs have the kind of authority over imagination today, which the printed word had yesterday, and the spoken word before that. They seem otterly real.” – Walter Lippmann.

Behind the scenes of BAAD, Portrayal.

At the end of the Winter Trimester, Alice O’Malley’s class portrait class, “Portrayal”, took a field to the Bronx Academy of Arts & Dance (BAAD), for an on location shoot with professional dancers from the academy.

Alumni and teachers assistant Paolo Quadrini captured behind the scenes moments of the students working with their subjects.

Discovering the streets of NYC

Photographer Gabriel Munhoz has found a new sense of freedom with his photographic practice since moving to New York City for the Doc and Visual Journalism Program, engaging more intimately with the streets and putting his lens towards the faces and places where light and beauty take center stage.

I like the freedom to create narratives within the frame that street photography allows. They are documents of the unfolding life, but it’s a looser approach compared to documentary photography.
Back in Brazil, it wasn’t safe to carry my camera on the streets all the time. Here in NYC I feel safe enough to be photographing my surroundings while I navigate through the city. So the street photos end up being, not only snaps of the city, but also a type of a diary of my time here.” 010_Munhoz_Docit014_Munhoz_DocitMunhoz_140104_1208_MasterMunhoz_171219_6324Munhoz_170916_1044Munhoz_171229_2787011_Munhoz_Docit004_Munhoz_DocitMunhoz_171021_5345Munhoz_140104_1196

Deadpan Photography

What is it exactly? An assignment given in Portrayal Class by Alice O’mally tried to answer this question:

Deadpan photograph is devoid of emotion. It simply exists as a subject and photograph, yet it seems to be empty. There is no joy or sorrow, although some can argue that the deadpan itself is a mood of its own. Famous photographers who use this aesthetic seem to be completely detached from the subject that they are photographing, and the word ‘indifference’ seems to describe the photograph perfectly.

The Life and Dreams of Gastro Sos

Photographer Ruban Wang.

Gastro Sos, 22 and from Guyana, sits in his blue room after smoking. He lives with his cousin in his grandfather’s house in Brooklyn.

He hopes to be a millionaire before 25 by art working. His dream is to be a model and an artist. He wants to be different from others, so he always pays attention to clothes and appearances.

Now, his job is food delivery. He gets orders in the APP, then buy the food in the restaurant and delivers it to the customers. He usually works 10am-2pm every day.

1Sos, he always puts a chain around his neck to make himself feel special.

2Sos felt little tired because of his birthday party last night.

3Sos walks in the city to deliver food between restaurants and customers.

4Sos got the food from the restaurant and delivered it to the customer.

5Sos’s phones are always busy: friends and girlfriend. People like him.

6Sos made the cigarette by himself. He showed me the G and the S on the card. That’s the first letters of his name, which was named after his grandfather.

7Sos smoking in his smoking box. His cousin’s family don’t like smoking, so he has to smoke outside.

8Sos’s dream is to be a model and an artist. He thinks it would be special and could make him rich and famous.
